Firefighters in Poughkeepsie wrangled a fierce new blaze at the abandoned Hudson River Psychiatric Center on Monday morning, clamping down on heavy flames and smoke that once again rippled across the Hudson Valley. The latest fire broke out as crews were already working hot spots at the sprawling 19th‑century complex after a massive multi‑alarm inferno earlier in the week.
Quick-hit flare-up knocked down fast
When the first crews rolled up, they found an "active fire" that had "already consumed multiple floors," Fairview Fire District Chief Justin Bohlmann told Times Union. Mutual aid companies from surrounding districts rushed in to help, and officials said the new blaze was declared under control in under two hours from the initial dispatch.
Aftershock from the June 3 inferno
Monday’s flare-up followed a massive June 3 fire that ripped through several buildings on the campus and destroyed the site’s main administrative (Avery) building, WAMC reported. More than a dozen fire districts responded to that earlier inferno, and officials have cautioned that structural collapse risks and hidden hot spots have made it tough to fully put the fires to bed.
Investigators probe cause and safety concerns
Investigators from the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Bureau, the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control have been called in to sort out what happened, the Poughkeepsie Daily Voice reported. There were no new civilian injuries tied to Monday’s response. Officials said two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion after the initial June 3 operation.
Air quality, heavy damage and a big-ticket redevelopment
Before the fires, the Kirkbride‑style complex had been lined up for a 576‑unit redevelopment by PCD Development in a roughly $250 million project, county officials told Times Union. State air monitors logged only slightly elevated readings after the earlier inferno, but public health officials urged people with respiratory issues to take it easy outdoors while firefighters remain on site.
How the blaze hit our radar
We first spotted video of the aftermath in a WAND‑TV segment titled "Massive New York factory fire now under control," which shows the towering smoke plume and fire crews working the scene. We will update this story as investigators release findings and officials share additional details.
