Two people were rushed to local hospitals after gunfire broke out early Thursday in Mount Vernon, leaving police searching for whoever pulled the trigger. Officers responding to reports of shots fired found both victims near the corner of South 3rd Avenue and East 1st Street, in the city’s downtown corridor. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening, and investigators say the case is very much still open.
According to Daily Voice, the Mount Vernon Police Department said officers arrived after callers reported gunfire and located the two shooting victims at the scene. Detectives are continuing to work the case, and police are asking anyone who saw or heard anything to contact the MVPD Detective Division at 914-665-2510.
Where It Happened
The shooting took place at South 3rd Avenue and East 1st Street, a downtown intersection that sits inside a zone long targeted for redevelopment under Mount Vernon’s Downtown Transit-Oriented Arts District plan. As outlined in a notice from the NYSDEC, the proposed DTOAD would cover the blocks between East 1st and East 2nd Street and South 1st and South 3rd Avenue.
