A quiet stretch of the Van Wyck Expressway service road in Jamaica, Queens turned into a crime scene early Sunday when a man was shot in the head and left in critical condition, police said. The gunmen, described as two men, sped off on a scooter and vanished into the night, while detectives taped off parts of the area and began combing for clues. No arrests have been announced.
Officers responded to a 911 call reporting an assault just after 1 a.m. near 104th Street and the Van Wyck Expressway service road, according to ABC7 New York. EMS later found the victim near 106th Street and the service road and rushed him to Jamaica Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Cops Say Shooter Duo Bolted on Scooter
Investigators say the suspects took off on a scooter immediately after the shooting. Beyond that, police have only described them as two males and have not released a more detailed description or any possible motive. Detectives are canvassing nearby homes and businesses for surveillance footage and are asking anyone who witnessed the attack or has video from around the time of the shooting to come forward.
Quick Getaways on Small Rides
Law enforcement officials have increasingly flagged scooters and e-bikes as a favored way to pull off fast getaways in recent months, a trend that makes on-foot pursuits tougher and turns doorbell and security cameras into critical tools. As detailed in a recent Hoodline report on a Bronx scooter robbery, suspects on small electric vehicles can disappear quickly, leaving detectives to lean heavily on public video to move cases forward.
