A late-morning drive turned deadly in Racine on Wednesday when 18-year-old Geovonnie Amie was shot and killed, leaving his family in mourning and police searching for answers.

Investigators say Amie was struck by gunfire in Mount Pleasant, then managed to drive about three blocks north before crashing into a parked vehicle near the 1900 block of Racine Street. He was found unresponsive in the car and later pronounced dead at the scene. Mount Pleasant police are handling the case as a homicide and say they have identified persons of interest, although no arrests have been made.

What officials say

According to a release from the Mount Pleasant Police Department, officers and Racine Fire Department rescue crews were called around 11:57 a.m. to a two-vehicle crash in the 1900 block of Racine Street. When they arrived, they discovered an unresponsive driver suffering from a gunshot wound.

The preliminary investigation indicates the shooting took place in the 2200 block of Racine Street in the Village of Mount Pleasant, after which the victim drove roughly three city blocks north before crashing. Investigators developed leads at the scene and turned the case over to Mount Pleasant detectives, according to the Mount Pleasant Police Department.

Crash scene and witnesses

Racine officers were the first to respond to the crash near 20th and Racine, where first responders tried life-saving measures but the driver was pronounced dead, FOX6 News Milwaukee reported. The station notes that investigators are asking anyone with information or surveillance video from the area to contact the Racine Police Department Investigations Unit at 262-635-7756 or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help Amie’s family cover burial expenses, WISN reported.
