A reported threat to grab a rifle from a vehicle and return to campus briefly sent Lone Star College–Tomball into lockdown Tuesday afternoon, rattling students and staff before officers declared the area safe about 30 minutes later. Campus police intercepted the person accused of making the comment, found no weapon, and no injuries were reported. Officials say the investigation is still underway.
Lockdown triggered by reported library threat
The scare started shortly after 1 p.m. inside the campus library, when an employee reported hearing a visitor say they would go to their vehicle to get a rifle and come back, according to Click2Houston. That report was enough to put the campus on immediate lockdown.
An emergency alert blasted out to students and staff, instructing them to secure where they were and stay quiet. The message pulled no punches: “ATTENTION: LSC-Tomball Main. Lockdown now. Go to nearest room and lock the door and stay quiet. THIS IS NOT A DRILL,” per Click2Houston.
Police intercepted the individual, no weapon found
Lone Star College System police located and intercepted the person after the threat was reported. Officers determined the individual did not have any weapons and “does not appear to be a student or employee of the college,” officials told Click2Houston.
The college emphasized in a statement that it “takes seriously and fully investigates all alleged threats to ensure the safety and security of our students, employees and facilities.” With no weapon located and the situation contained, officials lifted the lockdown at around 1:30 p.m.
How the college notifies the campus
Lone Star College uses a mass-notification system to reach students and staff during emergencies and publishes guidance on lockdown and shelter-in-place procedures on its emergency page at Lone Star College. The site lays out contact numbers for 24/7 police response and media inquiries and explains how information is shared during campus incidents.
What happens next
With no injuries reported and the campus back to normal operations, officials say the investigation remains active. It is not yet clear whether any charges will be filed. This story will be updated as authorities release additional details.
