A routine Monday ride on the Bx36 bus in Parkchester turned into a crime scene when a 41-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and critically wounded in the middle of the afternoon. Police say the victim was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he remains in critical condition. Crime scene tape sealed off the bus at East Tremont Avenue and White Plains Road as detectives combed through the evidence.
Officers were called to the scene just after 2:30 p.m., and the NYPD told reporters the man is “fighting for his life” at Jacobi, according to News 12 The Bronx. The outlet reported that it had reached out to the MTA for comment and was awaiting a response.
Where It Happened
The shooting unfolded along the Parkchester transit corridor, a busy transfer hub for Bronx bus riders, right at East Tremont Avenue and White Plains Road. The Bx36 route runs along Tremont Avenue and White Plains Road through Parkchester, according to the MTA.
Rider Safety And Context
Regulars on the Bx36 and other Bronx lines have been sounding the alarm about on-board violence for a while. A March attack on the same route, detailed in an earlier NYPD appeal for tips, put those worries in sharp relief; that Bronx bus beatdown highlighted how tense things can get on crowded city buses.
At the same time, City Hall has been touting broader gains in transit safety. A mayoral transcript notes that transit robberies hit historic lows in 2025 and that “shooting incidents on our subways were down a remarkable 63 percent,” according to a Mayor's Office transcript.
What Investigators Are Doing
The NYPD is investigating the bus shooting, and as of now there have been no arrests. Police have not released any suspect description. Anyone with information or video is urged to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online, as outlined by CBS New York. Officials have not provided further details on a possible motive or potential suspects.
Detectives continue to review footage and collect evidence from the bus and the intersection. The investigation remains active, and authorities say they will release more information as it becomes available.
