A San Antonio driver is facing serious felony charges after what authorities describe as a multi-county high-speed chase that started in the city and ended in Live Oak County on Sunday. Investigators say a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper used a tactical vehicle intervention on U.S. 281 to force the fleeing car to a stop and arrest the driver. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Christopher Lopez, is accused of aggravated kidnapping and other felonies. A female passenger was taken to a hospital as a precaution, and investigators say the case is still very much active.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the pursuit began in San Antonio and headed south on Interstate 37 through Atascosa County before entering Live Oak County. DPS said the chase finally ended when a trooper executed a tactical vehicle intervention on U.S. Highway 281, disabling the vehicle and allowing officers to take Lopez into custody. He was booked into the Live Oak County Jail. DPS said the woman in the vehicle was not hurt but was transported to a hospital out of an abundance of caution. The listed charges include aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon, evading arrest or detention, and obstruction or retaliation, DPS told reporters, as reported by KSAT.
Troopers’ Presence Along The Corridor
The combination of I-37 and U.S. 281 has become a familiar beat for state troopers, who have been ramping up traffic enforcement and criminal interdiction along that South Texas corridor. In March, DPS’s South Texas Region reported seizing nearly 2,000 pounds of methamphetamine during a traffic stop on U.S. 281 near George West, an operation that underscored how visible the agency has become on that route. That seizure was part of Operation Lone Star and illustrates why troopers and local deputies frequently coordinate on prolonged pursuits in rural counties. The earlier bust was detailed in a DPS press release from the agency. DPS
What The Charges Carry
Under Texas law, aggravated kidnapping is a first-degree felony, and using or displaying a deadly weapon is an aggravating factor that can sharply increase the punishment range. For cases that meet that threshold, the Texas Penal Code sets out a possible sentence of 25 to 99 years or life in prison, depending on how prosecutors charge the case and what a jury or judge ultimately finds. Lopez’s additional counts of evading arrest or detention and obstruction or retaliation would carry their own potential penalties if prosecutors move forward on those allegations. The relevant statutes and penalty ranges are listed in the Texas Penal Code. Texas Penal Code
Investigation Remains Active
DPS said the investigation is ongoing and urged anyone with information tied to the underlying kidnapping probe to contact the San Antonio Police Department, the agency told KSAT. Authorities have not yet released information about any initial court appearance or whether more charges could be added. Upcoming filings in court records and Live Oak County jail booking logs are expected to show the next steps as the case moves ahead.
