Northbound drivers on I-75 in Sarasota saw their Wednesday morning commute turn into a miles-long crawl after a crash at mile marker 193 left at least one person dead and forced troopers to push all traffic off the interstate at Exit 193 (Jacaranda Boulevard). Florida Highway Patrol units and emergency crews packed the scene as investigators worked the wreck and kept lanes shut. Commuters reported heavy backups on the off-ramps and surrounding surface streets as vehicles funneled off the highway.
According to Tampa Bay 28, the Florida Highway Patrol said the collision involved two vehicles at mile marker 193 and that all northbound drivers were being diverted at Exit 193 while troopers investigated. Officials have not yet released the names of those involved and said they would share more information as it becomes available.
Traffic updates and detours
The incident feed from FL511 showed northbound lanes near Exit 193 with left lanes blocked and advised drivers to use Jacaranda Boulevard to exit I-75. The service's live map reflected rolling updates as crews worked to clear the scene. Motorists should expect delays spilling onto nearby surface streets while the diversion remains in place, and operators urged drivers to steer clear of the area if they can.
Recent crashes on the I-75 corridor
This stretch of I-75 through Sarasota County has seen several serious collisions in recent months, including a deadly southbound crash on May 10 that killed a driver, according to WWSB/ABC7. Local traffic officials and the Florida Highway Patrol have repeatedly urged drivers to slow down and use caution as heavy truck volumes and ongoing construction leave some segments more hazardous than they might look at first glance.
FHP said additional updates would be provided as needed, per Tampa Bay 28, and drivers should check FL511 for the latest lane status before traveling through the area. We will update this post when authorities release more details.
