An early-morning fire ripped through a wooden backstretch barn used by trainers at the Saratoga Casino Hotel harness track in Saratoga Springs on Tuesday, killing 17 horses and leaving one with minor injuries. Live harness racing at the track was canceled for the day, and while the barn was demolished and the local racing community left reeling, no firefighters or other people were reported hurt.
Crews from the Saratoga Springs Fire Department were called at about 2:30 a.m. and found the barn fully engulfed in flames. The heat was so intense that firefighters could not enter the structure, so they attacked the blaze from the outside and soaked nearby buildings to stop it from spreading, according to the Times Union. Saratoga Casino Hotel said the barn housed roughly 18 horses and that rescuers were able to remove several animals before the fire became unmanageable.
Trainers Count Their Losses as Support Rolls In
A press release distributed to local newsrooms identified trainers Robyn Mangiardi and Timothy Benson among those who lost horses in the blaze. Eleven of the horses were listed as belonging to Mangiardi and six to Benson, according to WNYT. Saratoga Casino Hotel said it is partnering with Saratoga Hospital to offer grief counseling to trainers, caretakers and owners, and the facility is planning a memorial for the horses.
Race Staff Rushed In As Crews Fought to Contain Flames
Members of the track's security team and nearby NYRA staff pulled several horses to safety before the fire intensified, according to video and eyewitness accounts, and crews worked to keep the blaze from spreading along Nelson Avenue, the Daily Racing Form reported. "Our thoughts are with the horse owners, trainers, caretakers, and all those affected by this tragic loss," John Matarazzo, director of racing operations at Saratoga Casino Hotel, said in a statement published by the Daily Racing Form. No people were reported injured.
Deadly Blaze Rekindles Backstretch Safety Fears
The destroyed barn did not have a sprinkler system, and the harness association's lawyer said firefighters reported having problems reaching a hydrant. Those details have renewed industry calls to improve backstretch fire protections, according to the Times Union. The loss has also brought back memories of the 2023 Tioga Downs barn arson that killed 30 Standardbred horses and led to criminal charges, as reported by Standardbred Canada.
Fundraisers, Memorial Plans and a Long Investigation Ahead
Horsemen, local residents and racing groups began sharing fundraisers and messages of support online while track officials said details for a memorial will be announced once arrangements are finalized, according to WNYT. State and local investigators are on the scene, and officials cautioned that determining the cause will take time. They said updates will be released as more information becomes available.
Officials said they will continue to provide updates as the investigation moves forward. Memorial and support information has been posted to fundraising pages organized by the harness community, and track representatives said they will share further details once plans are set.
