Downtown Tampa is in full-on game mode this week as the 40th National Veterans Golden Age Games take over the city. The weeklong competition, which began Saturday and runs through Thursday, brings hundreds of military veterans aged 55 and older together to compete in more than 20 medal events at the Tampa Convention Center and nearby venues. Organizers describe the gathering as part rehabilitation program, part reunion, with serious competition wrapped in camaraderie, health-focused activities, and plenty of bragging rights. City officials are urging locals to come out, volunteer, and catch the action for free.
Where the competitions are taking place
Most of the events are based at the Tampa Convention Center, with additional competitions spread across downtown venues, according to the City of Tampa. The event page from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs lists Saturday through this Thursday as the official dates and lays out 21 medaled sports, ranging from archery and air pistol to powerlifting and track and field. Spectators and volunteers are encouraged to check the VA schedule for sport-by-sport times and locations before heading out.
Voices from the games
"We are so incredibly excited to see us, our ability to grow and improve access to sports and adapt to sports for veterans," said event director Brittany Hook, in comments reported by FOX 13 Tampa Bay. Many competitors told the station the scene feels less like a cutthroat tournament and more like a homecoming, with veterans praising the sense of community and support that keeps them coming back.
Numbers and local impact
A Hillsborough County Facebook post estimated that about 1,800 veterans would take part in this year’s games, while regional reporting by Bay News 9 put the field closer to 1,500 competitors. The City of Tampa has billed the Golden Age Games as the largest event in the program’s history and projects more than 2.1 million dollars in economic impact for downtown businesses. With a weeklong schedule and multiple venues in play, organizers say the event is also a major lift for volunteers and support staff behind the scenes.
How to watch and volunteer
All competition events are open to the public at no cost, and the VA posts the day-to-day and sport-by-sport schedule on its event page. Community members looking to pitch in can register for shifts through the official Golden Age Games volunteer portal.
Sponsors and why it matters
Veterans Canteen Service is serving as a host sponsor and will provide merchandise and services throughout the week, according to Veterans Canteen Service. Between the economic jolt for nearby businesses and the VA focus on adaptive sports and rehabilitation, organizers say the National Veterans Golden Age Games give older veterans a high-profile stage to reconnect, compete, and highlight how long-term fitness can support recovery and quality of life.
