Anne Arundel County police say a Saturday night call about an assault in Severn ended with a 16-year-old in custody and two loaded 9mm handguns pulled from a backpack the teen allegedly tried to ditch while running from officers. One of the pistols was later found to have an obliterated serial number, according to authorities.
Police: Backpack Held Two Loaded 9mm Handguns
As reported by FOX45, officers responded around 10:10 p.m. to a report of an assault near Parham Court and Stillmeadows Drive and spotted a youth trying to take off. Detectives say the teen tried to dump a backpack during the foot chase. Inside, they told FOX45, was a loaded 9mm with its serial number obliterated, along with a second loaded 9mm handgun. The 16-year-old from Severn was detained, arrested, and now faces charges, police said.
Not the First Recent Weapons Recovery in Severn
Anne Arundel County police records show this is not the only recent gun seizure in the area. In a June 1 press release, the department reported that a traffic stop on the 1100 block of Reese Road led to the recovery of a loaded 9mm Glock with an obliterated serial number, along with suspected fentanyl and MDMA. Anne Arundel County Police provided those details in the department's news posts.
Maryland Law and Why Serial Numbers Matter
Maryland’s Public Safety Code sets strict rules on who can possess regulated firearms, including age-based limits and categories of people barred from having guns that often guide how charges are filed. Justia outlines those restrictions, and legal guides note that obliterating a serial number can increase both investigative interest and potential penalties.
