Sony Pictures is betting big on downtown Detroit, pledging a $100 million investment in Cosm, the immersive "Shared Reality" venue operator that plans to open its fourth U.S. dome just off Campus Martius Park this September. The Detroit location is slated to anchor Bedrock’s Development at Cadillac Square and was pitched in 2024 as a Dan Gilbert-backed centerpiece for the city’s growing entertainment district. Cosm’s dome systems are built to mimic stadium-scale sports and concert energy inside a compact urban footprint.

Sony's investment and timeline

As reported by Investing.com, Sony Pictures is leading Cosm’s Series C round and will take a minority stake in the company, with Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Ravi Ahuja set to join Cosm’s board. Cosm said in its own announcement that the $100 million infusion will help speed up venue rollouts and technology initiatives, specifically flagging Detroit for a September opening and Cleveland for early next year in its Cosm press release.

Design and the downtown site

Developer Bedrock says Cosm Detroit will sit within the Development at Cadillac Square next to Campus Martius Park and is being designed by Detroit architecture firm Rossetti, which teamed with the developer to release early renderings of the dome and adjacent public spaces. The venue is planned around a roughly 26.6-meter, 12K+ LED dome, and the broader Cadillac Square concept calls for about 70,000 square feet of venue space with a separate 34,000-square-foot market hall nearby, according to Axios Detroit.

What the money buys

Sony’s backing is expected to tighten Cosm’s connection to major studio IP and give the company a longer runway to scale its Shared Reality production work and venue rollout strategy, according to industry coverage. “We’re excited to support Cosm’s next phase of growth,” Sony Pictures’ Ravi Ahuja said in a statement, per TheWrap, while Cosm’s leadership has said the capital will go toward expanding both its physical locations and the underlying technology that powers them.

What comes next for Detroit

Framing and dome installation are already visible at the downtown site, and Cosm and Bedrock say the Detroit venue’s programming will blend marquee sports broadcasts with immersive film, art and live events to keep the dome active year-round. Details on ticketing, full event lineups and food-and-beverage offerings have not yet been released; Cosm and Bedrock say they will roll out that information closer to the planned September opening in updates tied to the launch.
