Authorities say an 18-year-old man died Sunday after his car left Arco Corporate Drive near Macaw Street in Raleigh and slammed into two trees. The vehicle caught fire, and the driver was taken to a hospital, where he later died. A juvenile who had been in the front passenger seat was injured but is expected to be OK.
According to WRAL, Raleigh police said the crash happened around 1:14 p.m. The driver, identified as 18-year-old Abraham Karim Manrique Ponce, was reportedly speeding when his vehicle left the roadway and struck the trees. Police told the outlet Ponce was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car, which then caught fire. Raleigh police said their investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Speed, Summer and Young Drivers
Speed is a major contributor to deadly crashes both nationally and in North Carolina. A report from TRIP found that speeding-related collisions accounted for roughly 28 percent of U.S. traffic fatalities in 2024, and North Carolina Health News reported speed was linked to about 40 percent of traffic deaths in the state in 2022. The risk is heightened for inexperienced drivers during the summer, a stretch AAA calls the "100 Deadliest Days" for teen drivers.
What Crash Investigators Will Be Looking At
Crash reconstruction typically focuses on speed, seat belt use, roadway conditions and possible impairment as forensics and witness statements are reviewed. WRAL reports Raleigh police have not released further details about the cause of the crash.
Federal safety research underscores why seat belts matter. The NHTSA notes that lap-and-shoulder belts reduce the risk of fatal injury for front-seat occupants by about 45 percent.
