A young child is in critical condition after being swept into St. Vrain Creek in Boulder County on Tuesday, triggering a tense search that stretched for more than an hour before rescuers were able to pull the child from the water.
According to CBS News Colorado, emergency crews scoured the creek downstream for about an hour before locating the child. The outlet did not release the child’s age or any identifying details. In the brief video segment, viewers can see rescuers moving along the creek’s edge, combing the banks and thick brush as the search unfolded.
St. Vrain’s seasonal risks and past rescues
St. Vrain Creek and its tributaries often run high and fast during spring snowmelt and after heavy storms, creating powerful currents that can quickly overpower anyone in the water. In a June 2021 release, Boulder County detailed a similar swiftwater rescue at Meadows Park in Lyons that also lasted about an hour and drew in multiple agencies, highlighting how rapidly conditions on the creek can turn dangerous.
What officials say
Authorities have not released further information about how the child ended up in the creek or any details about the child’s identity, according to the initial CBS report. This story will be updated if local agencies provide additional information or issue a formal statement.
