A Columbus man accused of killing a 17-year-old Olentangy Orange High School student while she rode an electric scooter is now set to face a Delaware County jury on July 28, 2026, in Common Pleas Court. The deadly crash on Feb. 27 led to upgraded charges from a grand jury, and a new round of filings and hearings has pulled the case back into the public eye as residents wait for answers.
According to The Columbus Dispatch, the crash happened around 3:43 p.m. on Feb. 27 when a 2025 Mazda CX-50 driven by 22-year-old Aviv Bukobza left its marked lane on State Route 750 near East Powell Road and struck the teen on the shoulder. Orange Township medics pronounced her dead at the scene, and troopers reported that Bukobza stayed at the scene and was not injured. The Ohio State Highway Patrol has been leading the probe into whether driver error or any other factors contributed to the collision.
The victim, 17-year-old Anastasia Jehorek, was a senior at Olentangy Orange and, according to her family, had been riding to a job when she was hit. Loved ones called her a “bright light in our lives,” as reported by The Columbus Dispatch. In the days after the crash, school officials made grief counselors available to students and staff shaken by the loss.
Charges and court dates
A Delaware County grand jury later indicted Bukobza on aggravated vehicular homicide and reckless homicide, both third-degree felony counts, along with a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge, the Delaware Gazette reports. Bukobza has entered a not-guilty plea. A judge continued his 10,000 dollar bond and ordered GPS monitoring, barred him from driving, and required that his passport be held by the clerk. A pretrial hearing is set for July 6 at 9 a.m., and the jury trial is scheduled to start July 28, 2026, in Delaware County Common Pleas Court.
Legal implications and potential penalties
The aggravated vehicular homicide and reckless homicide charges are third-degree felonies under Ohio law, while the vehicular manslaughter count is a misdemeanor. If he is convicted on the felony counts, Bukobza could face prison time under the sentencing ranges set by state statute. The Ohio Revised Code lists definite prison terms for third-degree felonies, including 9, 12, 18, 24, 30 or 36 months, and notes that some third-degree offenses can carry higher maximum sentences. For the statutory sentencing ranges, see the Ohio Revised Code.
Scene, vehicle and case status
State troopers and local reporting identify the vehicle as a 2025 Mazda CX-50 and say investigators concluded the driver crossed out of his marked lane before the impact, according to the Delaware Gazette. Earlier municipal court charges were dismissed after the grand jury returned its indictment in April. Court records show that Bukobza requested a jury trial, and that defense counsel previously asked the court to provide a Hebrew interpreter. At the upcoming pretrial hearing, prosecutors and defense attorneys are expected to argue motions and lock in evidence deadlines ahead of the July trial.
What’s next
The case heads back to Delaware County Common Pleas Court in early July for the pretrial conference, with voir dire and jury selection planned to kick off when the trial opens on July 28, 2026. The Highway Patrol investigation remains active, and any new motions or orders will appear in the county clerk’s online docket as the case progresses. Families and community members are closely watching how the proceedings unfold, looking for clarity on what happened and how the court addresses e-scooter safety along busy suburban corridors.
