San Joaquin County voters waiting for answers on primary night will not be getting the full story at 8 p.m., but they will get the first chapter. County election officials plan to post their initial unofficial results right at 8 p.m. on Election Night, featuring vote-by-mail ballots received through Saturday, May 30, along with ballots cast during the early voting period. After that, the numbers will refresh through the night and on a regular canvass schedule as outstanding ballots are reviewed and added.

How the county will roll out results

According to the San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters, polls close at 8 p.m., and the first report will drop at the same time. That early release will include all vote-by-mail ballots received through Saturday, May 30, plus ballots cast during the early voting window.

Starting at 8 p.m., the Registrar’s office plans to update results every two hours until all ballots from in-person polling places are fully reported.

“Election Night results are just the beginning of the counting process,” Registrar of Voters Olivia Hale said in the county’s announcement. The office expects to issue the first report on remaining unprocessed ballots on Thursday by 5 p.m., followed by an update on Friday by 7 p.m. After that, new tallies are scheduled for every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7 p.m. until the canvass is complete. The county is aiming to certify the final results on June 25, 2026.

Why totals can shift after Election Night

Those early Election Night numbers are far from the final word. Totals can move as additional vote-by-mail ballots, provisional ballots and ballots requiring signature verification are processed and added.

As The Sacramento Bee notes, counties can keep accepting and counting ballots that were postmarked by Election Day for several days afterward. That means early leads might shrink, grow or flip entirely as the canvass continues.

Where to watch and what to watch for

Live tallies and reports on how many ballots are still unprocessed will be posted on the San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters website. Statewide and county-by-county numbers will be available on the California Secretary of State’s online results portal at the California Secretary of State.

For quick questions from observers or the media during the canvass period, the Registrar’s office has listed its contact line as (209) 468-VOTE (8683).
