New Yorkers are waking up to a bright and comfortable start this Sunday, June 7, 2026, with Central Park (KNYC) checking in at about 67°F early this morning. The city is on tap for mostly sunny skies and a high near 83°F, with west winds turning noticeably breezy as the day wears on. Tonight stays mostly clear, and temperatures ease back into the mid 60s.
Afternoon Winds and Beach Conditions
By late morning into the afternoon, those west winds are expected to ramp up to around 9 to 15 mph, with gusts that could hit 20 to 25 mph. Out on the ocean waters, the Small Craft Advisory has been dropped after seas eased to around 3 to 4 feet. Even so, swimmers heading to local ocean beaches should not get too casual about the conditions. A 10 to 15 kt alongshore flow paired with a 4-foot, 7-second southerly swell is creating a moderate rip current risk today, so staying near lifeguards and following posted signs is strongly advised.
Most of the five boroughs should stay dry, although a few isolated showers could bubble up well east of the city later in the day. After that, high pressure ridging builds in by midweek and flips the script from pleasant to punishing, with temperatures climbing into the low to mid 90s by Thursday and heat indices pushing close to 100°F away from the coast, according to the National Weather Service.
Plan Ahead: Cooling Centers And Heat Safety
If you are sensitive to heat, now is the time to think ahead. The city opens cooling centers when temperature thresholds are met and lists those locations through 311, so you will have options when that midweek heat flexes. In the meantime, basic summer rules still apply: drink plenty of water, go easy on strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon, and grab shade whenever you can.
