A 16-year-old Norristown boy is facing murder charges after what police say began as a fight between groups of teens in a downtown alley ended with a 15-year-old shot in the head Wednesday night. Investigators say a quick turnaround, powered by video footage and physical evidence, led to the arrest and left neighbors and schools rattled.
The call came in just after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday from Haws Alley off George Street, where officers found a 15-year-old with a gunshot wound to the head; he was later pronounced dead at Paoli Trauma Center, according to KYW Newsradio. That report says 16-year-old Alex Herrera was stopped nearby shortly after the shot and taken to the Norristown Police Department.
Scene and evidence
Detectives recovered a live round, a fired cartridge casing and a cellphone at the scene that authorities say belonged to Herrera, and investigators reviewed video showing several teenagers running from the alley after a shot was fired, according to FOX 29. The district attorney's office says Herrera is charged with First‑Degree Murder, Third‑Degree Murder, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm by a minor and possessing an instrument of crime, and that he is being held at the Montgomery County Youth Center awaiting arraignment.
What charging documents say
According to charging documents described by KYW Newsradio, Herrera and some friends had a longstanding "beef" with another group and met three times that night, moving each time because of a visible police presence. The complaint says Herrera told officers he had purchased a handgun from a 17‑year‑old "to make sure things didn’t get out of hand," that he was assaulted, pulled the gun and pointed it at the 15-year-old before a shot was fired.
School and community reaction
The Norristown Area School District confirmed the slain student was in ninth grade and that Herrera is a 10th‑grade student; officials said heightened emotions prompted a temporary lockdown, a shelter‑in‑place and an early dismissal, FOX 29 reports. Neighbors told FOX 29 they heard multiple gunshots and voiced concern that the alley has seen prior violence, with one resident saying the bullet "could have come right into my home."
What happens next
Herrera is awaiting arraignment and a preliminary hearing will be scheduled as the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office continues its investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Norristown Police Department or Montgomery County detectives.
