What began as a late-night trip on the Delaware River in Northeast Philadelphia turned into a grim search-and-recovery effort early Friday after a man who went swimming from a boat failed to resurface. The operation focused near the Linden Avenue boat ramp at Pleasant Hill Park in the Torresdale section, where witnesses said he went under at about 1 a.m. Friends gathered at the dock were visibly shaken as crews on both sides of the river worked through the early morning hours.
People who rushed to the scene identified the missing man as Carlos, a well-known barber who works on Rising Sun Avenue, and recalled his last words to a friend: "I can't no more. I love you." Friends and witnesses said two men had jumped into the water from a cluster of three or four boats and that one swimmer began to struggle and never resurfaced. Those accounts came from friends and witnesses, as reported by 6abc.
Searchers on both sides of the river
Philadelphia police and fire units swept the Pennsylvania shoreline while Burlington County and Bensalem marine units searched the New Jersey side. The U.S. Coast Guard also joined in, sending boats and a helicopter over the river. After roughly two hours of searching, authorities shifted from an active search to a recovery operation, according to 6abc. Officials have not released a formal identification or additional details.
Open-water hazards and alcohol
Friends at the scene told reporters the group had been drinking before heading into the water, a mix that can sharply increase the risk of drowning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that alcohol impairs judgment, balance and coordination and is a frequent factor in drowning incidents. The agency recommends avoiding alcohol before or during water activities. Rivers like the Delaware can also bring strong currents, cold-water shock and boat traffic into the equation, which can complicate both rescue and recovery efforts.
Pleasant Hill Park and the Linden Avenue ramp
Pleasant Hill Park is a riverside recreation area in Northeast Philadelphia that features fish hatcheries and a public boat launch at Linden Avenue, a spot neighbors often use to put smaller craft on the water. The site is managed by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, which lists the park among its riverfront amenities. Its easy access makes the ramp a popular launch point in warm weather and a place where river-safety reminders rarely feel out of place.
Police said the recovery operation remained underway Friday morning and that they had not yet confirmed an identity. Friends and neighbors stayed near the boat ramp waiting for word from authorities as crews continued to search the river. This story will be updated when officials release more information.
