A Bronx woman was pulled from a burning Tremont home Thursday afternoon and rushed to a hospital in serious condition after a fast-moving blaze tore through part of a Hughes Avenue house.

The fire erupted on the second floor of a two-family home at 2259 Hughes Ave., where two of the building's three families managed to escape without injury. Neighbors described chaotic scenes on the block as firefighters fought their way into the home to reach the trapped woman.

What happened

According to News12, the FDNY said flames broke out around 4:16 p.m. inside the home. First responders performed CPR on the woman at the scene before rushing her to the hospital. The department has not confirmed her current condition.

Crews battled access and structural issues

Firefighters reported structural concerns at the building and tight access on the narrow one-way street. Crews also had to work around a large tree while trying to reach the flames, complicating efforts to get equipment into position.

The FDNY has repeatedly warned that blocked hydrants and tight street access can slow fire operations, and the department urged drivers not to block hydrants in a 2025 release from FDNY.

Investigation and neighborhood response

Fire marshals were on scene investigating the cause and asked neighbors for surveillance footage recorded in the 30 minutes before the blaze, News12 reports.

Community members helped reunite the woman's son with the family's dog, which had been found trembling in the smoke. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. Fire marshals and the FDNY have not released further details about the origin of the fire and said they will provide updates as the probe continues.
