Westerville is clearing the streets and loading up the schedule for Independence Day, rolling out a full Saturday, July 4 lineup that starts with a veterans 5K at sunrise hours and wraps with fireworks after dark at the Westerville Sports Complex. The Rotary Club of Westerville and city departments are teaming up under this year’s theme, “250 Years Strong, We All Belong,” promising a family-heavy crowd, traffic tie-ups, and tight parking around Uptown and the Sports Complex.
Schedule and where to watch
According to the City of Westerville, the day starts early at the Westerville Sports Complex (325 N. Cleveland Ave.), with the Independence Day Vets 5K and kids fun runs based there. A pre-race ceremony is set for 7:30 a.m., with the 5K stepping off at 8 a.m.
The Uptown parade is scheduled to roll at 10:15 a.m. down State Street, while evening festivities back at the Sports Complex kick off at 5 p.m. The city has a professional fireworks show set for 10 p.m., so plan on the crowds sticking around late.
Parade route and theme
The Rotary Club of Westerville outlines the parade route along State Street from Old County Line Road south to Electric Avenue, with floats and bands staging in the St. Paul Catholic Church parking lot. Rotary officials say the “250 Years Strong, We All Belong” theme came out of a school contest, and the student whose idea won will ride on the Rotary float as part of the procession.
The Rotary is also handling parade entries and the logistics for the Vets 5K, along with volunteer information and instructions on its event page.
Getting there: road closures and parking
Drivers who try to wing it may not love what they find. The city plans to close State Street between County Line Road and Electric Avenue starting at 9:15 a.m. for the parade. Later in the day, Cleveland Avenue will be shut down from Hanawalt Road to County Line Road from 4 to 11 p.m. to make way for the evening crowds around the Sports Complex.
Public parking will not be available at the Sports Complex for the nighttime festivities, so do not count on sliding into a last-minute spot there. Instead, the city has arranged expanded off-site parking at 360 Westar Blvd. Neighborhood towing and ticketing will be enforced, so visitors are urged to use designated lots or walk in from nearby areas rather than testing their luck on side streets.
Trail work could affect access
Westerville Parks & Recreation notes that a rebuild of the Ohio to Erie Trail between Old County Line Road and Electric Avenue began in June, complete with signed detours. Anyone planning to bike or walk into Uptown or the Sports Complex should give themselves extra time and follow the posted detour signs to avoid hitting a dead end on the way to the festivities.
Register, volunteer and last-minute tips
Runners can sign up for the Vets 5K through the Rotary’s event page or via RunSignUp. The race day program includes a kids fun run and a veterans honor guard ceremony as part of the morning events at the Sports Complex.
For those who want to get in the middle of the action instead of just watching it go by, parade entries and volunteer instructions are posted with the Rotary Club of Westerville. For day-of updates, safety notices, and photos, the city is sharing information on its Facebook page, and the post embedded above includes the latest details heading into the holiday.
