A vacant one-story house in Echo Park briefly lit up North Patton Street on Wednesday morning when a small structure fire sent flames and smoke into the air before firefighters quickly shut it down. The blaze was contained to the building and there were no reported injuries.
Quick knockdown, no injuries reported
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire, logged as INC#0615, was reported at 10:54 a.m. and was knocked down in about 11 minutes by roughly 38 firefighters. First-arriving crews reported a vacant one-story single-family dwelling with moderate smoke showing and went into offensive mode, with units responding from Fire Station 3 and Battalion 1. No injuries were reported.
Vacant buildings and city rules
Vacant structures can bring extra headaches for firefighters because they may hide ignition sources or unauthorized activity that slips under the radar. Under the Los Angeles Fire Code, buildings that are temporarily unoccupied must be kept secure and may be inspected or ordered to fix unsafe conditions.
What neighbors should know
The department wrapped its post on X with a simple sign-off: "Nothing further," as crews cleared the scene and went back in service. Neighbors with concerns about vacant properties or potential fire hazards are urged to contact city officials. Emergencies should always go to 911, while non-emergency issues can be routed through the city's customer service portals.
