Las Vegas is slipping into Father's Day weekend on something that almost counts as a weather vacation: warm, sunny and close to normal for mid-June instead of full-on furnace mode. Highs around the valley are expected to hover in the low 100s, with gusty winds possible Saturday and calmer weather returning Sunday, even as fire weather remains a concern while crews battle wildfires burning south of Caliente.
According to KTNV, meteorologist Guy Tannenbaum is calling for official highs near 103°F at Harry Reid International Airport today and Sunday, with around 101°F on Saturday. Winds should ease in time for Father's Day, but he also warns that a more dangerous heat surge is expected to build back in next week.
Red Flag Warning and fire weather
The National Weather Service in Las Vegas has issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of southern Nevada, citing low humidity and gusty winds that could help any spark become a fast-moving fire. NWS products outline the specific fire weather zones under the warning and urge people to skip activities that might create sparks while it is in effect. That same combination of dry fuels and strong winds is also making containment tougher for firefighters already on the line.
Two wildfires south of Caliente
Federal and local reports detail two lightning-sparked wildfires burning south of Caliente in Lincoln County. KOLO-TV reports the Kane Springs Fire at roughly 5,700 acres and the Grapevine Fire at about 1,125 acres, both showing extreme fire behavior with only minimal containment as crews respond along the Utah border.
Smoke and air quality outlook
So far, winds are steering most of the smoke north into White Pine County and western Utah, making Ely the most likely place to see noticeable plumes, according to KTNV. Even so, the Clark County Division of Air Quality and regional forecasts indicate that ozone combined with light wildfire smoke could push the Las Vegas Valley's Air Quality Index into the "Moderate" to "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" range today and into Sunday.
What to do this weekend
The National Weather Service in Las Vegas projects a return to more extreme heat by midweek, with highs near or above 110°F possible on Wednesday and Thursday. Older adults, people with heart or lung conditions and anyone working or exercising outside may want to dial back strenuous activity and keep an eye on real-time conditions using the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map. Keep water and shade close at hand, avoid spark-producing activities while the Red Flag Warning is active and follow instructions from local authorities as conditions evolve.
