A 31-year-old inmate who slipped away from a Volusia County housing facility did not make it far. Deputies say Jalyn Binion, who walked off from the Daytona Beach-area site on June 21, was tracked to his girlfriend’s Vero Beach apartment and arrested there on June 22 after he tried to climb out a second-story window while law enforcement closed in.
How Deputies Closed In
Indian River County deputies, working with a U.S. Marshals task force, headed to a barrier-island residence after learning Binion had been spotted with his girlfriend, who authorities say picked him up from the Department of Corrections facility. Body-camera video released by law enforcement shows officers smashing a sliding glass door and issuing a canine warning before Binion emerges and is taken into custody, according to Vero News. Deputies then booked him into the Indian River County Jail following the June 22 arrest.
What Officials Say About The Escape
Florida Department of Corrections records show Binion escaped from a Volusia County housing facility in Daytona Beach on June 21 and was tracked into Indian River County the next day. Deputies say he tried to jump from a second-story window before officers moved in, and he was ultimately taken into custody by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service. FOX 35 Orlando reports that Binion had been serving time for grand theft charges when he left the facility.
Charges And Custody
Indian River County deputies said Binion was booked on an attempted escape charge and is being held without bond at the Indian River County Jail, with plans to move him back into Volusia custody, according to Vero News. Deputies told reporters that his girlfriend was briefly detained on suspicion of harboring an escapee but later cooperated with investigators and was released. Court records show Binion’s most recent prison terms were for several grand-theft counts and that he had been expected to remain in custody through this November.
What’s Next
Federal marshals assisted in securing the scene, highlighting the multiagency response to the escape, and authorities say standard transfer procedures will return Binion to Volusia custody for processing, per FOX 35 Orlando. Officials have not yet released details on any additional charges or upcoming court dates, and local agencies have declined further comment beyond the body-camera footage and arrest report.
