A 70-year-old man died Wednesday after his motorcycle collided with a pickup on northbound Veterans Highway in Millersville, Anne Arundel County. Emergency crews rushed the rider to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
According to WMAR2 News, investigators identified the rider as Charles Braun and said he was on a 1982 Yamaha XJ650 when he tried to change lanes across uneven pavement. Police say Braun lost control, was thrown from the motorcycle, and landed in the path of a Chevrolet Colorado. The Colorado's 29-year-old driver was not injured. Officers responded to the crash at 3:07 p.m., and the Crash Reconstruction Team processed the scene while the investigation continues.
Road Surface And Local Hazards
Investigators flagged the uneven pavement at the crash site, a reminder that riders making a simple lane change can run into big trouble when the road surface is off. Anne Arundel County traffic engineering summaries list shoulder defects, holes, and ruts among roadway-condition categories at problem locations, showing how surface issues are tracked as factors in collisions. Local officials have periodically targeted stretches of Veterans Highway for maintenance and safety work, although repairs hinge on budgets and scheduling.
Where This Fits In The Bigger Picture
Motorcyclists remain overrepresented in serious crashes statewide, and Maryland's traffic-safety program has made motorcycle safety a focus in recent grant and enforcement efforts. Zero Deaths Maryland reported 582 people were killed on state roadways in 2024 and highlighted motorcycle-safety grants as a priority. Safety advocates often point to helmet use, visibility on the road, and improved maintenance of pavement as key levers to cut down on single-vehicle motorcycle fatalities.
The Anne Arundel County Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact its tip line as investigators continue to review the crash. Per WMAR2 News, police have not released additional details.
