San Antonio’s River North nightlife strip is getting a new late night neighbor, as Volcano Mexican Food & Tacos moves into the former Artisan Distillery suite on North Alamo Street. The taqueria is set to plug right into a stretch already lined with breweries and bars that stay busy on weekends.
According to MySA, Volcano appears to be taking over the shuttered Artisan Distillery space next to Roadmap Brewing. MySA also points to a video on the restaurant’s Facebook page that showed construction underway as early as Nov. 6, 2025. The business profile teases tacos “crafted with love, using premium ingredients and homemade salsas,” although the page has been quiet since last November.
A project listing on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation website identifies “Volcano Restaurant” at 723 N. Alamo St. The filing shows a privately funded tenant improvement renovation pegged at $80,000, with work scheduled from July 6 through Dec. 31, 2026.
Where It Fits In The River North Boom
The address lands in the heart of the North Alamo and nearby Brooklyn Avenue cluster that local coverage has labeled San Antonio’s fastest growing nightlife pocket, marked by Roadmap Brewing and a run of new bars and beer gardens. The San Antonio Express-News has tracked that rapid build out and the mix of craft beer, cocktails and late night spots that are reshaping the neighborhood.
Artisan Distillery, known for its Spike Vodka and immersive themed nights, announced its closure late last year and fully wound down its downtown operations in January, which opened the door for a new tenant. MySA previously reported on Artisan’s decision to close, citing rising costs and shifts in the market.
What We Still Do Not Know
For now, there is no confirmed opening date, no final menu and no word on whether Volcano will pour drinks along with tacos. Media outreach to the operators had not been returned at the time of reporting. If construction sticks to the permitted summer timeline, neighbors can likely count on another late night taco option along North Alamo once the renovation wraps up.
