A Sunday afternoon at Walnut Beach in Ashtabula County turned tragic when a 15-year-old boy drowned after disappearing in the water. Fellow beachgoers reported the teen missing, first responders pulled him from Lake Erie, and he was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Calls about a possible missing swimmer came in at 1:23 p.m., and Ashtabula police said the boy had been underwater for more than 15 minutes before crews found him. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Ashtabula County Coroner's Office told Fox 8 it is not releasing additional details at this time.
According to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, this appears to be the third drowning on Lake Erie so far this year, a sobering start to the busy summer season. The group’s running tracker shows drownings across all of the Great Lakes remain a persistent problem, and advocates have continued to push for more lifesaving equipment and public education to cut down on fatalities, according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project.
Walnut Beach's History and Hazards
Walnut Beach, a city park off Walnut Boulevard, has a history of rough surf and close calls. A separate incident left a 16-year-old in critical condition after a near-drowning there, as previously reported by News 5 Cleveland. When conditions on Lake Erie turn dangerous, authorities at times issue Beach Hazard Statements warning swimmers to stay cautious.
Safety Concerns and What Officials Are Pushing For
Water-safety experts say several recurring factors drive drownings on Lake Erie: rip currents, sudden drop-offs under the surface, and deceptively cold water. The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project has called for more life rings, more lifeguards, and stronger public education campaigns, while the National Weather Service issues Beach Hazard Statements when conditions pose extra risk, according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project.
Ashtabula police and county investigators are still working the case and have asked anyone with video or information from the scene to contact the department, officials told Fox 8. The coroner will determine the official cause of death after an autopsy. Our condolences go out to the teenager’s family and friends as the community absorbs yet another loss on the lake.
