A late-night crossing on Detroit’s west side turned deadly last Saturday, when a driver struck a man in his 40s on West Seven Mile Road at Wormer around 10 p.m. and then sped away. Emergency Medical Services rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The vehicle that hit him did not stay at the scene, and the investigation remains open.
What police say
According to ClickOnDetroit, Detroit police said the crash happened last Saturday at about 10 p.m. at West 7 Mile Road and Wormer. The outlet reported that the victim was only identified as a man in his 40s, who was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead there. At the time of that report, investigators had not released any description of the vehicle involved or identified a suspect.
Hit-and-run trend
The tragedy on West Seven Mile fits into a grim national pattern of increasingly deadly hit-and-run crashes. A March 2026 research brief from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that police-reported hit-and-run crashes reached roughly 919,000 in 2023 and were tied to about 2,872 deaths that year. Federal data from the NHTSA also show that about one in four pedestrian and cyclist deaths in 2023 involved drivers who left the scene.
Seven Mile corridor has seen serious crashes
The West Seven Mile corridor has already seen multiple serious collisions this year, including a fatal crash at Seven Mile and Southfield in April, local TV reported. Those incidents highlight how busy arterials on Detroit’s west side can quickly become dangerous for people walking and crossing, especially after dark. The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning's 2024 annual report has pointed to higher hit-and-run rates in local “hot spot” areas and is pushing for more targeted enforcement and infrastructure changes to protect people outside of cars.
