Early Wednesday, a slick stretch of I-69 just south of FM 1485 near New Caney turned deadly, leaving one person dead and two others hospitalized after a multi-vehicle collision. The crash, reported at about 5:45 a.m., began when a Toyota passenger vehicle lost control on the wet pavement, hit the median and spun into oncoming traffic.

According to FOX 26 Houston, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers say the Toyota was then struck by a Toyota pickup and a Ford F-150. DPS officials identified the driver of the Toyota passenger vehicle as the person pronounced dead at the scene and said the crash remains under investigation.

The Montgomery County Hospital District confirmed two people were taken to area hospitals and said both patients are expected to recover. Authorities have not released the names of those involved while investigators continue their work and notify next of kin.

What troopers say about the crash

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the initial vehicle lost control on the wet roadway, struck the median and spun into the path of oncoming traffic, where the other vehicles collided with it. Troopers stayed on scene for several hours collecting evidence and said a formal crash report will be filed once the scene is fully processed.

Wet roads have been deadly this spring

Wet pavement has been cited in a string of serious wrecks around Montgomery County this spring, including a head-on collision on State Highway 99 in April that killed two drivers. In that crash, troopers said wet road conditions may have been a factor, according to head-on crash kills two drivers.

Texas DPS is asking anyone with dash-cam footage or other information about Wednesday morning’s crash to contact their local trooper office. This story will be updated if officials release names or additional details.
