A Town of Beloit man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after a Rock County judge sentenced him Thursday, June 11, 2026, to life in prison without the possibility of parole. A jury had already found him guilty in the February 3, 2025, shooting that killed a 24-year-old at a Wisconsin Avenue residence in what prosecutors called a one-man rampage that left others injured. The sentencing took place at the Rock County Courthouse in Janesville.
Dennis Banks, 32, was convicted earlier this year of first-degree intentional homicide, battery, possession of a firearm by a felon and recklessly endangering safety, according to WIFR. The trial lasted about five days, and jurors needed less than two hours of deliberations to return guilty verdicts on all counts.
Deadly Dispute On Wisconsin Avenue
Prosecutors say Banks returned to a home in the 1900 block of Wisconsin Avenue on Feb. 3, 2025, became angry, pistol-whipped one person and then shot a 24-year-old man in the face after an argument about rent and living conditions, as reported by Beloit Daily News. Initial police reports indicated nine people were inside the home at the time, including two children, and the victim has not been publicly identified.
Judge Hands Down Life Term
A judge imposed life without parole on Banks on Thursday, with court records showing sentences were entered on all four counts, according to WCTV. Prosecutors had pushed for the maximum punishment, arguing that the victim was killed while trying to protect another person.
Prosecutor And Defense Square Off In Court
Rock County District Attorney Jason Sanders told the court the victim was killed trying to protect another woman and that Banks "was in a blind rage," Beloit Daily News reports. Defense attorney Kevin Smith told jurors he would show Banks had been framed, and the judge ultimately issued sentences on all counts, the reporting says.
Investigation And Arrest
Investigators initially struggled to get witnesses to cooperate, and Banks was arrested by Feb. 7, 2025, after several people came forward, WIFR reported. The trial began in late February 2026 and included testimony from nearly two dozen witnesses.
Legal Implications
The life sentence without parole means Banks will remain in custody for the foreseeable future, and convictions on the related weapons and assault counts add to the long-term penalties he faces. Defense lawyers can still pursue post-trial motions and appeals, which are common in cases that result in life terms.
