A late-night traffic stop in Yuba City on June 5 ended with two people in handcuffs and roughly 76 grams of methamphetamine off the street, according to police. Officers pulled over a Dodge truck near the intersection of Kimball Avenue and Brown Avenue at about 11:40 PM, and both occupants were arrested and taken to Sutter County Jail. The bust adds one more entry to what has been a busy run of local narcotics enforcement.
Authorities identified the driver as 65-year-old Gale Johnson and the passenger as 61-year-old Deborah Phykitt. Officers reported finding about 76 grams of suspected meth along with drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. Both Johnson and Phykitt were booked into Sutter County Jail on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine for sale, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Action News Now. A records check also turned up an outstanding felony warrant for Johnson, police said.
"The arrest demonstrates proactive policing efforts aimed at keeping illegal narcotics off the streets," the Yuba City Police Department said in a statement shared with Action News Now. What began as a routine vehicle check escalated quickly once officers located the suspected drugs and related items. Authorities have not yet released information about arraignment dates or bond.
Bigger enforcement picture
The Yuba City seizure lands in the middle of an active stretch of multi‑agency drug enforcement across the Yuba‑Sutter region. Earlier in June, a broader operation netted nearly 30 pounds of cocaine and led to a dozen arrests, reflecting stepped-up investigations in recent weeks, according to The Sacramento Bee. Local task forces have been pairing search warrants with traffic-stop work, aiming at both street-level suppliers and larger distribution networks. Officials say smaller, everyday stops that uncover narcotics are a regular part of that larger strategy.
Local context
Yuba City officers and the NET‑5 narcotics task force have conducted several recent raids and traffic stop arrests in the area. An April search on Miles Avenue, for example, turned up cash, pills and other evidence, as reported in a Hoodline report. Authorities and public-health advocates point to shifting drug and pill distribution patterns that raise overdose and safety concerns, which helps explain the multi-pronged enforcement approach around Yuba City. Police routinely urge residents with tips or concerns about possible drug activity to call the department’s non-emergency line.
Charges and next steps
According to police, both suspects are facing felony allegations that will be evaluated by the Sutter County District Attorney's Office. If prosecutors file formal charges, the case will be transferred to Sutter County Superior Court, where arraignment and pretrial hearings will be scheduled. For now, the investigation remains active, and Yuba City police say they will release additional details as appropriate.
