An Akron man says his routine drive home from an overtime shift turned into a fight for survival yesterday when gunfire exploded around him, and cars tore out of the area as people dove for cover. His account, captured on camera, shows just how fast an ordinary commute can turn into chaos for residents who live nearby.
Survivor's account
In a video report, Fox 8 Cleveland's I-Team identifies the driver as Marino Neveadomi. He tells the station he had just wrapped up his overtime shift and had "started the drive to his Akron house" when shots rang out.
Neveadomi describes trying to put space between his car and the gunfire as bullets flew and people ran in different directions. Vehicles sped off at the same time, turning the street into a frantic escape route for anyone caught in the middle of the shooting.
City context
The station’s report does not mention any arrests or describe possible suspects, and it is not clear from the piece whether anyone was detained in connection with the incident. The chaos lines up with other recent bursts of violence in Akron, including a June parking lot shootout that left bystanders wounded, as reported in Highland Square chaos, and has neighbors on edge.
Why this matters
Close calls like Neveadomi’s highlight Akron’s continuing struggle to rein in street violence and restore a basic sense of safety in hard-hit neighborhoods. Community leaders have previously pointed to stronger enforcement efforts and community tips in other cases, yet residents say the sound and sight of gunfire still cut into daily routines and the flow of local business.
The Fox 8 I-Team video remains the main public account of this survivor’s experience. We are watching for official updates or releases from the Akron police and will add them as they are made available.
