One of Ballard's most recognizable corners is about to smell a lot more like butter and less like burnt espresso. Petit Pierre Bakery is taking over the vacant Starbucks storefront on Market Street in Ballard, moving into roughly 2,300 square feet of retail space that has sat empty since last September. The French-style bakery, known locally for its laminated croissants and savory pastries, will add a new outpost to its existing Phinney Ridge and Magnolia locations. The corner has been a neighborhood fixture for more than a decade, after the previous Starbucks served Ballard for 13 years before closing in 2025.
As reported by Puget Sound Business Journal, Petit Pierre will move into a 2,300-square-foot space that housed a Starbucks for 13 years before closing last September. The outlet identified the tenant change but did not include an official opening date for the bakery.
Petit Pierre's Local Footprint
Per the bakery's website, Petit Pierre Bakery currently operates shops in Phinney Ridge and Magnolia, and it highlights croissants as its signature item. The site also notes local recognition, with the Magnolia location named a neighborhood business of the year, underscoring the bakery's growing profile as it steps onto this higher-visibility Market Street corner.
A New Tenant for a Familiar Corner
The storefront at 2200 NW Market St has been vacant since Starbucks shuttered its downtown Ballard location in September 2025, neighborhood outlet My Ballard reported. That closure was part of broader Starbucks reductions last year, and My Ballard's archives note the Market Street store first opened in 2012.
Petit Pierre's arrival could shift the feel of that block. The bakery's laminated pastries and compact storefronts tend to draw morning lines and quick turnover rather than drive-thru traffic. We will update when an official opening date or details about the new layout are released.
