Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014, billed as the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, is set to thunder back into the Pittsburgh region this Saturday as part of a coast-to-coast tour honoring America’s 250th. The restored giant will make a brief whistle-stop in Leetsdale that evening, giving rail fans a rare, close-up look at a machine that stretches well over 130 feet. Plan ahead if you want a good view: public stops are short and the crowds are expected to be anything but small.
When and where to watch
According to Union Pacific, the locomotive will visit the Horseshoe Curve in Altoona in the morning for ticketed viewing, then continue toward the Pittsburgh area with a scheduled whistle-stop in Leetsdale at 1st Street/Avenue A and Ferry Street. It is slated to arrive around 6:15 p.m. and depart about 6:45 p.m. The railroad notes the schedule can change and that public stops typically last only 15–30 minutes.
What you’ll see
CBS Pittsburgh reports that No. 4014 was built in 1941, carries roughly 25,000 gallons of water, weighs about 1.2 million pounds and measures roughly 133 feet from end to end. Ed Dickens, who led the restoration, told the station that “it brings people together,” while local rail buffs called the locomotive “an astounding piece of machinery.” The engine is the only Big Boy currently under steam after a years-long restoration and touring schedule.
Safety and logistics
The Borough of Leetsdale has directed viewers to the Ferry Street railroad crossing near the Subway as the preferred viewing area and notes that there are no designated parking lots for the event, according to local coverage. WPXI adds that drivers should avoid blocking emergency routes and should follow any temporary road closures. Union Pacific also urges people to stay at least 25 feet from the tracks and never cross or place objects on the rails while the train is moving, per Union Pacific.
Can’t make Leetsdale?
If you would rather stake out a downtown vantage point, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is hosting a “Waiting on Big Boy” gathering at Point State Park’s Fountain Plaza from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., offering an alternate city-center viewing spot. CBS Pittsburgh notes that previous Pennsylvania stops have drawn large crowds, so pack water, some shade, and a little patience.
