In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a 55-year-old man walking near Frisby Avenue and Overing Street in the Bronx was jumped from behind, hit in the head with a gun and robbed of his wallet and cellphone. Police say the attacker showed the firearm, struck the victim, then took off eastbound on Overing Avenue, and detectives are now turning to the public for help tracking him down.
The NYPD’s Crime Stoppers unit put out a “WANTED FOR A ROBBERY” bulletin on Saturday laying out the pre-dawn stickup and sharing surveillance stills of the suspect, according to NYPD Crime Stoppers. The bulletin lists the victim as a 55-year-old male and says the suspect came up from behind, displayed a firearm, struck him with the weapon and removed his wallet and cellphone before fleeing. Anyone who recognizes the person in the images or has video from the area is urged to contact investigators.
Where it happened
The robbery went down at Frisby Avenue and Overing Street in the Westchester Square/Westchester Village section of the Bronx, within the NYPD’s 45th Precinct, which patrols a large stretch of the northeastern borough, according to the precinct’s official page. Local mapping listings place Overing and Frisby just off the Westchester Avenue commercial strip and amid neighborhood housing, a layout that helps explain where the surveillance stills were captured, per Walk Score.
How to submit tips
Anyone with information or footage is asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or, for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the online form, according to NYPD Crime Stoppers. The bulletin notes that tips can be sent on X as well by messaging or tagging @NYPDTips.
Why police released images
Detectives have leaned more heavily this summer on Crime Stoppers alerts and surveillance stills to stir up leads in street robberies, with local outlets tracking the trend. As short wanted bulletins have highlighted, quick-hit suspect flyers have become a go-to tool for the NYPD to draw out community tips and additional video.
