A routine walk down the steps to catch a train turned into a violent scene Wednesday night in Brownsville, when a 44-year-old man was stabbed in the back on the staircase leading to the Sutter Avenue–Rutland Road subway station, police said. The attack was described as unprovoked and left the rider in stable condition after he was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center. Detectives canvassed the area after the stabbing, while the suspect remained at large.
Attack described as unprovoked
According to the New York Post, the victim was knifed from behind on the station steps in what police called an unprovoked strike. Investigators said the attacker did not say a word before the stabbing, then bolted from the scene.
Officers described the suspect as wearing jeans and work boots. The wounded man was taken to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition, the outlet reported.
Stop has seen violence before
The Sutter Avenue–Rutland Road stop has seen trouble before. In 2021, police released video after a stabbing at the same station, as reported by amNewYork. The station serves the 3 train and sits near Utica Avenue in Brownsville, a small but heavily used link in the city’s subway network.
Police say systemwide trends are mixed
The NYPD told the New York Post that major crime across the subway system is down about 1 percent year over year. At the same time, felony assaults have ticked up, with roughly 20 more incidents recorded through June, and felony-assault arrests on the rails were up 9 percent during the first six months of the year, according to the report.
Detectives said they are investigating the Brownsville attack and are asking the public for tips.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the NYPD. Investigators are especially looking for witnesses and anyone with cellphone video as the probe continues.
