An overnight parking lot takeover at a northeast Harris County shopping center ended in gunfire early Friday, leaving two people in their early 20s wounded, deputies said.

Investigators said one victim ran into a nearby Whataburger looking for help while the other left the scene before later being taken to a local hospital. Authorities have not released the victims' conditions or said whether any suspects have been identified.

According to Click2Houston, deputies were called around 1:25 a.m. after reports of gunfire in a busy lot shared by a Walgreens, a bank and a Home Depot near the Eastex Freeway and Little York Road. Investigators told the station a street takeover was underway when the shooting started, and both victims were hit by gunfire.

Where It Happened

The shooting unfolded in a well-trafficked retail hub at the Eastex and Little York corridor, an area that has already been on edge over recent violence. Hoodline recently reported on a June 10 fatal shooting on West Little York that also brought homicide detectives to the area.

Why Takeovers Can Turn Deadly

Parking lot "takeovers" are loosely organized gatherings where drivers whip cars around and perform stunts while crowds gather to watch. They can go south in a hurry. In a 2024 incident, a Houston-area takeover escalated into a chase and rollover crash that injured people and damaged property, as FOX26 reported.

In Friday's shooting, investigators with the Harris County Sheriff's Office are still combing through evidence from the scene and are asking anyone with information to contact HCSO or Crime Stoppers, Click2Houston noted.
