This Fourth of July, Chapel Hill is trading thunderous booms for buzzing LEDs. Instead of its usual fireworks, the town is rolling out a 300-drone light show over Chapel Hill High School, with a free evening program starting at 7 p.m. and the aerial spectacle set for later in the night. Town officials say the shift follows resident feedback and lines up with Chapel Hill’s climate goals.

According to the Town of Chapel Hill, the Skyworx-produced show will use 300 synchronized drones and run roughly from 7:00 to 9:45 p.m., with the drones scheduled to lift off at about 9:20 p.m. The town’s event page also spells out the ground rules for the night: no tents, tailgates, pets, alcohol or personal fireworks.

Why Chapel Hill Pulled the Plug On Fireworks

Town leaders say the decision came after a 2024 community survey and fits neatly with Chapel Hill’s Climate Action and Response Plan, outlined by Sustain Chapel Hill. The survey results, reported by the News & Observer, show 762 people responded, with about 83% ranking a drone show as a first- or second-choice and 77% doing the same for fireworks.

"Fireworks are not as environmentally friendly as drones, and it does create a quieter and more accessible viewing experience for our community members," said Darien Cropper, the town's marketing and communications coordinator for Community Arts & Culture.

Parking, Shuttles And Getting To The Show

There will be no general parking at Chapel Hill High School, Smith Middle School or Seawell Elementary. Instead, attendees are asked to park in free lots served by shuttles. The Town of Chapel Hill notes that the Rosemary Parking Deck and UNC’s RR Lot open at 6 p.m., with shuttle service running from 6 to 8:45 p.m. and again from 9:35 to 10:05 p.m.

The Eubanks Park & Ride lot opens at 7:30 p.m. ADA parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at Chapel Hill High School, according to the town’s event listing.

Officials are also keeping one eye on the weather. Hot, dry conditions raise the risk of fires from consumer fireworks, and WRAL reports that the Triangle is seeing elevated fire danger ahead of the holiday. Local officials have urged residents to skip home fireworks and head to professional shows instead.

How The Drones Stack Up Against Fireworks

Drone shows are being promoted as a lower-waste, lower-noise alternative to traditional pyrotechnics, and Chapel Hill’s chosen vendor comes with some serious credentials. DroneLife covered Skyworx’s 1,200-unit performance at CES 2026, and Skyworx highlights its work producing tightly choreographed aerial displays for large public events.

Organizers are expecting a crowd and advise people to bring water, blankets, chairs and picnic supplies, since seating will not be provided, according to the News & Observer. For an event map and the latest logistics, residents are directed to the Town of Chapel Hill’s official listing.
