An adult pulled from a burning apartment in Columbia, Howard County, died Tuesday evening after firefighters rushed them out of a smoke-filled unit and began CPR, authorities said.
Crews were dispatched to the 11500 block of Little Patuxent Parkway for reports of an odor of smoke and traced it to a kitchen fire inside one apartment. Firefighters removed the victim from the unit and started life-saving efforts, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not yet released the victim’s name.
The Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services said crews contained the blaze in about 10 minutes after arriving. The Howard County Fire Marshal is working alongside county police to investigate how the fire started, and no additional details about the victim or the unit had been released while crews cleared the scene, according to DC News Now.
Response and Investigation
Investigators on scene focused on the kitchen area as they worked to determine how the blaze began. They collected witness statements and building information while documenting fire damage for the official report.
Authorities have not given a timeline for when they will release an official cause, saying the work involves both forensic analysis and follow-up interviews.
Kitchen Fires Remain a Top Hazard
Cooking-related fires remain one of the leading causes of home fires and injuries, with unattended cooking frequently cited as a trigger. Fire officials routinely urge residents to stay in the kitchen while frying or grilling, keep combustibles away from heat sources, and know how to safely shut off a burner if something goes wrong.
The U.S. Fire Administration highlights simple prevention steps, along with the importance of working smoke alarms and a family escape plan, as key tools for reducing the risk of death or injury in cooking-related incidents.
What Residents Should Know
Residents of the Columbia apartment complex may see investigators return as county officials continue their work at the scene. Authorities say they will share more information once it is available and the cause is confirmed.
Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the Howard County Police Department.
