What started as a routine domestic dispute call on Columbus' Far East Side turned chaotic yesterday evening, when one officer was accidentally shot by another at 2699 Divot Place.
The call came in around 5:47 p.m. Responding officers exchanged gunfire, and police say one officer at the scene fired shots that struck both a fellow officer and a dog. An unknown number of rounds were discharged. The wounded officer was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.
The dog was taken to animal control. The original domestic dispute was ultimately resolved with no arrests, and officials have not said whether anyone will be cited in connection with the animal being shot. As WSYX reported, police would not immediately release the names of the officers involved or say whether the dog's owner could face charges.
Previous Dog Shootings Have Sparked Debate
This is not the first time police gunfire and family pets have collided in Columbus. In 2025, officers shot multiple dogs after responding to a domestic violence call that turned out to be false. One animal was killed, others were injured, and the incident ignited a local debate over tactics, communication, and how quickly officers resort to their weapons when animals are involved. That earlier episode and its fallout were detailed when officers shot dogs after a false domestic call.
In the wake of such incidents, state investigators have frequently been asked to review officer-involved shootings in Columbus. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is often the agency called in, according to the Ohio Attorney General’s office.
What We Still Do Not Know
Officials have released only a bare-bones description of what happened on Divot Place. They have not named the officers involved or explained in detail how the friendly fire occurred.
Basic questions remain unanswered. It is still unclear who owns the dog that was shot or whether that person might face any charges related to the incident. Police also have not said whether they had been called to that address before. As WSYX noted, authorities have not yet identified which agency will review the shooting.
This is a developing story. More details are expected once investigators complete initial interviews and the reviewing agency is formally announced.
