A Lakeland man is facing criminal charges after investigators say he caused a hit-and-run crash with an ambulance that left a paramedic injured, rattling local emergency responders and triggering a criminal investigation.
According to FOX 13 Tampa Bay, the collision involved an ambulance that was already on a call when it was hit, and one of the paramedics on board was hurt. The station's post, published today, notes that authorities are pursuing criminal charges but had not released the suspect’s name or a list of counts in the immediate aftermath.
Paramedics Face Heavy Call Volume in Polk County
Polk County Fire Rescue crews already handle a heavy workload, roughly 400 calls a day, and county officials earlier this year approved a new EMS station to help ease that pressure, according to Bay News 9. Trade coverage has also highlighted how a single serious crash can strain staffing and response capacity. In December 2025, a pickup truck struck an ambulance in Polk County and left a paramedic critically injured, an incident detailed by JEMS.
What the Law Covers
Investigators say charges are pending in the latest case, but local reports did not immediately list specific counts. Under Florida law, leaving the scene of a crash that causes injury can be prosecuted as a felony. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles explains that drivers are required to stop and render aid after a crash. Legal analyses of FindLaw on Florida Statute 316.027 note that fleeing the scene when someone is hurt can bring prison time and license penalties.
FOX 13's initial report did not include the suspect’s name, the exact crash location or an update on the injured paramedic’s condition, and investigators asked anyone with information to contact authorities. Hoodline will update this report as law enforcement releases charging documents or additional details.
