A Sunday confrontation at East 183rd Street and the Grand Concourse in the Bronx turned deadly when a 46-year-old man was stabbed and later died at the hospital, according to police.
Officers said the victim was rushed by emergency responders to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was being withheld so his family could be notified.
What police say
Responding to an assault call at the busy west Bronx intersection, officers from the 46th Precinct found the man with stab wounds. Investigators told amNewYork the deadly encounter started as a verbal dispute that escalated.
Authorities said multiple suspects took off in several different vehicles after the stabbing. No arrests had been announced, and detectives were still actively working the case.
46th Precinct context
The killing lands in the middle of broader concerns about rising violence in parts of the west Bronx. Community leaders and police have pointed to an uptick in serious crime in the 46th Precinct, which covers Fordham, University Heights, Morris Heights and Mount Hope, with more homicides recorded so far this year than at the same time last year, local reporting notes.
Officials said they have been leaning on CompStat data to target extra patrols in the area, according to Norwood News, a strategy that puts this latest killing squarely on the radar of both cops and neighborhood advocates.
How to help the investigation
Investigators are urging anyone who saw what happened or who has video from the area to come forward. The NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline can be reached at 1-800-577-TIPS, or in Spanish at 1-888-57-PISTA, and tips can also be submitted online through the NYPD Crime Stoppers site, according to NYPD Crime Stoppers.
Police are specifically asking neighbors and drivers with dash-cam or doorbell-camera footage from near East 183rd Street and the Grand Concourse to share it with detectives.
The investigation remains active, and detectives at the 46th Precinct want to hear from anyone who might have information. The NYPD said it will update the public as the probe continues.
