One person died Saturday night after a severe flash flood on Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, according to base emergency crews. JBSA-Lackland firefighters were called to Hall Street for a vehicle caught in high water, and the individual inside was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released the victim's name and say the incident remains under investigation.
What Happened On Base
In a news release, base officials said the JBSA-Lackland Fire Department responded to a “trapped vehicle” on Hall Street, where the person was later pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by KSAT. The base described the episode as a “severe flash flood.”
KSAT's Weather Authority estimated that between three and six inches of rain fell upstream, sending Leon Creek up roughly 10 feet by evening.
Rain, Runoff And A Fast-Rising Creek
San Antonio's creeks can rise rapidly when intense Hill Country storms funnel runoff into urban channels, making low-water crossings especially dangerous. The National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio has repeatedly warned about life-threatening flash flooding in the region and urges motorists to follow the “Turn Around, Don't Drown” guidance when they encounter flooded roads. Local emergency responders say even a few inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle off the road.
Safety Warnings And What Comes Next
According to the base release and local coverage, the person was pronounced dead at the location and their identity has not been released, per KSAT. Residents and drivers on the Southwest Side are urged to monitor official JBSA and county alerts for road closures and updates.
This is a developing story and will be updated as base or local officials provide more information.
