A man died Thursday evening after losing control of his motorcycle along Mount Washington’s Grandview Avenue, emergency dispatchers said, on a stretch of road that already had neighbors worried about safety.
Crews were called to the intersection of Grandview Avenue and P.J. McArdle Roadway at about 7:15 p.m., and medics pronounced the rider dead at the scene. P.J. McArdle was restricted between Route 51 and Grandview while crews worked.
A Pittsburgh Police spokesperson told Channel 11 that the rider lost control of his motorcycle and crashed, and that no other vehicles were involved, as reported by WPXI. The rider has not been identified, and the story was described as developing.
Why Grandview Draws Safety Attention
Grandview Avenue and the adjacent P.J. McArdle Roadway have long been singled out for speeding and crash concerns, and county planners recently highlighted stretches of McArdle as priorities for safety work. As reported by WESA, the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission's Vision Zero planning lists sections of McArdle among corridors targeted for improvements.
The City of Pittsburgh has also installed permanent speed humps on parts of Grandview and continues to pursue neighborhood traffic-calming projects, according to the city's press materials.
Residents Want More Enforcement
Neighbors have complained for years about burnouts and reckless driving along the overlook, and local officials have promised stepped-up patrols during busy weekends, CBS Pittsburgh reported. The Post-Gazette has also covered community frustration and past enforcement actions on Mount Washington's Grandview stretch, as residents and council members have urged a mix of engineering fixes and targeted enforcement to keep the scenic overlook safe.
Police have not released further details about the rider while the investigation remains active. Channel 11 said it was working to learn more and will update its coverage, as noted by WPXI.
