A pedestrian was killed Friday after being struck at the intersection of U.S. Highway 19 and Countryside Boulevard in Clearwater, according to police. Southbound lanes of U.S. 19 at State Road 580 were shut down, backing up traffic across the area while officers worked the scene. Investigators have not yet released the names of those involved as they piece together how the collision happened.
Clearwater police said the crash involved a single vehicle and a pedestrian, and that the roadway would stay closed "until further notice," according to the Tampa Free Press. The shutdown has created heavy delays along the corridor, and drivers are being urged to steer clear of the intersection and find alternate routes. The investigation remains active, and officers have not provided additional details.
Long-term Work on U.S. 19
The U.S. 19 stretch through Clearwater is already in the middle of a multi-year Florida Department of Transportation overhaul aimed at easing congestion and making it safer for people on foot. Project records outline a $242.7 million rebuild from SR 580 north to CR 95 that includes new interchanges, a pedestrian underpass, and a pedestrian bridge, with construction slated to finish in 2029, according to FDOT Tampa Bay. Those upgrades are intended to cut down on risky crossings and the kind of vehicle-pedestrian conflicts now under scrutiny.
Intersection's Crash History
The same corner has seen headline-making collisions before. Last November, a PSTA bus crash at U.S. 19 and Countryside Boulevard sent multiple people to hospitals, as reported by FOX 13, and Hoodline previously covered that wreck as part of a pattern of safety concerns at the intersection. Neighbors and traffic-safety advocates have pointed to those earlier crashes while pushing for quicker fixes.
