An international Delta Air Lines flight from the Bahamas made an unexpected stop in Jacksonville on Thursday after severe turbulence left one person injured and shook up the cabin.
Emergency crews met the aircraft as it landed at Jacksonville International Airport (JIA). One person was taken to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, while several others were checked at the gate. The plane landed safely, and crews worked at the terminal to evaluate passengers and help them on their way.
As reported by News4JAX, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue responded, and the Jacksonville Aviation Authority said there were 68 people on board. First responders assessed travelers at the gate area and transported one person for additional treatment. The flight had been en route from the Bahamas when it diverted to Jacksonville.
Turbulence risk and safety measures
The National Transportation Safety Board has warned that turbulence encounters remain a leading cause of in-flight injuries and has recommended steps to reduce those risks, including better reporting and more focused crew training. The NTSB stresses that keeping seat belts fastened whenever seated is the single most effective way to prevent many of the injuries it sees in these cases.
The Federal Aviation Administration echoes that advice, urging passengers to stay buckled even when the seat belt sign is off and noting that modern forecasting tools can help flight crews route around the most severe pockets of rough air, according to the FAA.
What this means for travelers at JAX
Jacksonville International handles seasonal international service to the Bahamas and keeps plans in place for unscheduled arrivals, medical responses and passenger assistance. The Jacksonville Aviation Authority lists resources and contact numbers that travelers can use after disruptions like diversions or medical calls. Airport operations were not reported to be significantly delayed once responders cleared the scene and passengers were assisted at the gate.
Public reporting on this diversion has remained limited so far. News4JAX reported that the flight originated in the Bahamas and provided the injury and passenger details described above.
