Downtown Jacksonville’s historic Barnett tower is getting a fresh caffeine jolt. 1926 Coffee Co. is set to take over the ground floor retail space at The Residences at Barnett, bringing a small, period-inspired cafe with house-roasted beans, signature lattes and pastries to the Northbank.

Building owner Becovic Management Group rolled out the news on LinkedIn and Instagram, promising "handcrafted coffee, signature drinks and a unique experience" in the landmark building’s lobby-level spot. The concept leans into the tower’s early 20th-century roots and is pitched as one more way to get some actual street life going along that stretch of Adams Street.

The city is reviewing a permit for about 646 square feet of tenant build-out for dining, coffee, a market and back-of-house space at 112 W. Adams St., according to the Jax Daily Record. That report also catches a quirky detail: while the cafe’s branding points to 1926, county property records list an older construction date for the building.

Menu, look and price points

On its own site, 1926 Coffee Co. lists signature drinks and specialty lattes mostly in the $4 to $6.50 range, with drip and espresso drinks running roughly $3 to $5.25. Pastries are shown around $3.25 to $4.50.

The design leans into an Art Deco interior, with marble counters, dark wood and black-and-white tile, while highlighting house-roasted single-origin beans. The shop is also touting locally inflected offerings such as an orange-zested cold brew. Menu details and photos are available at 1926coffee.com.

Build-out, team and cost

The planned build-out is relatively modest in scale. The permit lists Avant Construction Group as contractor and Group 4 Design Inc. as architect and interior designer, with an estimated project cost of about $95,000, per the Jax Daily Record.

The Barnett itself is an 18-story mixed-use tower, with apartments above its street-level retail. 1926 Coffee Co. is slated to fill the building’s ground-floor retail footprint, giving residents and downtown workers another option that does not require getting in the car.

Where it fits in the downtown coffee map

When it opens, 1926 Coffee Co. will join a slowly thickening lineup of independent coffee spots serving downtown’s office crowd, residents and museum visitors. Other nearby options include Setlan Coffee Co. inside MOCA, Urban Grind Coffee Co. on W. Bay Street, Chamblin’s Uptown on N. Laura Street and Something Better Cafe & Kitchen on W. Adams, along with a Jacksonville Coffee Company outpost on E. Bay Street.

Back on the Barnett corner, the hope is that a steady flow of latte runs will help drive more daytime foot traffic to the building’s retail strip as other Northbank redevelopment efforts move along.

For now, the 1926 Coffee Co. site lists the Barnett location as "Coming Soon" and does not give a firm opening date while permitting moves forward. Customers can check the menu and pickup information at 1926coffee.com as the build-out progresses.
