A weekend outing on Cleveland’s lakefront turned heartbreaking after 5-year-old Mason Thomas was pulled from Lake Erie near the East 55th Street Marina, leaving regulars stunned at one of the city’s busiest waterfront hangouts.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner identified the child as Mason Thomas and said he fell into the water near the E. 55th Street Marina around 9 p.m. Saturday, according to Cleveland 19. Multiple agencies joined the overnight search, and the boy’s body was recovered Sunday afternoon in the same area, the outlet reports. Neighbors and waterfront regulars described a stunned, quiet disbelief after learning what had happened.
The East 55th Street Marina is part of the Cleveland Metroparks Lakefront Reservation, located at 5555 North Marginal Road. The site offers docks, a 1,200-foot fishing platform and a paddling launch, according to Cleveland Metroparks. The marina’s online listing also provides emergency contact information and outlines amenities for boaters and anglers who frequent the spot.
Lakefront Risks And Recent Drownings
Local and regional groups say the tragedy fits into a troubling summer pattern on the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project’s tally shows 35 drownings across the five lakes so far in 2026, with seven reported in Lake Erie as of July 10, 2026, underscoring how a day on the water can turn dangerous in a matter of moments, according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project.
Officials Urge Caution
State officials and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources say that cold-water shock, shifting currents and submerged debris can put even strong swimmers at risk. They urge people heading out on the lake to wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets and to check weather nd water conditions in advance, Spectrum News reports. Rescue groups also stress keeping a close eye on children near the water and carrying basic safety gear on boats, kayaks and other watercraft.
Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances beyond the Medical Examiner’s identification, Cleveland 19 reports. For now, the lakefront community is left to mourn the loss of a young life while rescue and safety organizations renew their calls for vigilance along Lake Erie’s shoreline.
