A 56-year-old man being held at Hillsborough County’s Falkenburg Road Jail died Thursday after deputies said he was taken to Tampa General Hospital for medical care. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office identified him as Darrell Bernardo and said detectives have opened a death investigation into the circumstances.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, Bernardo died after the jail transport to Tampa General. The sheriff’s office confirmed the investigation but did not immediately release a cause of death. Details about Bernardo’s family or his booking were also withheld as the inquiry got underway.
Detectives Take Over After Inmate’s Death
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office typically opens a detective-led death investigation when a detainee dies after a medical transport, then defers to the Medical Examiner for an official cause, according to agency statements. In a recent press release the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office described that process after an inmate was taken to Tampa General and later pronounced dead. Those releases commonly note that the Medical Examiner’s Office will complete an autopsy and that next of kin are contacted once appropriate.
The Tampa Bay Times reported deputies were at Falkenburg Road Jail on Thursday as the investigation began but said officials provided few additional operational details. Authorities have not said whether Bernardo had any preexisting medical conditions or when the autopsy might be finished.
What Comes Next
Detectives are expected to review medical records, staff reports and any available video or surveillance from the housing unit as part of the routine probe, while the Medical Examiner will issue an official cause of death once the autopsy is complete. Falkenburg Road Jail is the county’s larger detention complex, the sheriff’s office lists a rated capacity of about 3,300 beds, so any in-custody death tends to draw scrutiny from families and local officials. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office materials outline the facility’s role in county detention operations and standard procedures that follow a death.
The sheriff’s office said it will provide updates as the investigation continues. We will update this story when officials release additional information.
