A large sinkhole opened yesterday afternoon at the intersection of East 130th Street and Buckeye Road on Cleveland’s East Side, turning a busy crossing into an active work zone and traffic headache. Emergency crews converged on the scene and blocked the roadway while workers assessed the collapse. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was hurt, and city crews were investigating a possible water main break.
As reported by 19 News, a station crew was on scene at East 130th and Buckeye, and the outlet said it had contacted the Cleveland Division of Fire, Cleveland Division of Police, and Cleveland EMS for more information. The station described the situation as developing while crews worked to secure the area.
Another sign of aging pipes
The E. 130th collapse is the latest in a string of road failures across the city this spring. News 5 Cleveland reported a large downtown sinkhole in March that closed the West 3rd and West St. Clair intersection for days, and a May sinkhole near West 114th Street snarled traffic and prompted calls for repairs.
Officials and what to watch for
Cleveland Water says main breaks are an ongoing challenge and that crews prioritize safety and coordination when a collapse involves utilities. The utility’s site notes that it responds to roughly five main breaks a day and outlines a multistep investigation and repair process, and residents are asked to report leaks and visible failures. If you see flowing water, sagging pavement or discolored taps, call Cleveland Water’s 24-hour emergency line at 216-664-3060 and give the exact location of the problem. The department's guidance is posted online.
What to expect next
Expect the intersection to remain closed while crews and investigators secure the scene and determine the cause, and plan alternate routes if you travel through the Buckeye corridor. We will update this post as agencies release new information. For ongoing coverage, see 19 News.
